The equipment the artist requires to put on the show. This typically includes amplifiers, stands, cables, drums. It generally excludes the venue PA and monitor sound systems as well as individual instruments like guitars and basses. The backline can either be supplied by the artists themselves, or will sometimes be provided by the venue as specified in the artist‘s performance contract.
